A Concorde model miniature with three fighter jet model miniatures from David Lowell Rich's The Concorde..Airport '79. A Concorde airliner was both protected and attacked by fighter jets during its intense maiden voyage after being targeted by a corrupt arms dealer.
The four Airport films together grossed a total of $387.5 million worldwide and are largely credited for the blockbuster growth of the disaster film genre. The Concorde..Airport '79, the fourth and final installment in the franchise, utilized shots of real-world, full-size planes as well as special miniature effects by Cleo E. Baker which were created at Universal Hartland Visual Effects under the supervision of Peter Anderson.
This lot, which originated from the collection of special effects master Greg Jein through model miniature collector Gary Cannavo, consists of four model miniatures. The Concorde model miniature is made primarily of fiberglass over a metal armature and features three-plus mounting ports, a magnetically attached nose, and is deliberately finished in matte yellow as opposed to the actual white color of the Concorde. This was a deliberate technique to pull sharper mattes for optical compositing, as white models were subject to "blue spill." Color timing during the optical compositing process allowed for the model to appear off-white in the final shot. It is also adorned with red Concorde logos, the number "F-BTSC," and gray detailing.
Constructed from fiberglass and metal, the gray McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom model miniature includes fine red and white detailing, a miniature pilot in the cockpit, open ports on the bottom and sides for mounting, four miniature missiles, and a removable black-and-white canopy that was shot separately on a blue screen pass and composited translucently over the primary pass (featuring the open cockpit) to simulate glass in the final cut. Also included are two nose cone miniatures created for different shots of the gray Phantom.
The other McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom model miniature is painted orange to designate its role as a Hughes Industries unmanned target drone. It features black, gray, red, and white detailing, along with the numbers "40," "9420," and "QF-4B 149420." The gray Dassault-Breguet Mirage F-1 model miniature is made of fiberglass and metal and includes black, red, white, and yellow detailing, a miniature pilot in the cockpit, and multiple open ports on the bottom, front, and back for blue screen mounting. Additionally, the Mirage F-1 is marked with the number "12-ZL" and features French roundels, as well as graphics of a dog and a scorpion.
Each miniature features some detachable components and exhibits signs of use, including scuffing, staining, and grime from production and age. Dimensions: (largest) 54" x 24" x 11" (137.25 cm x 61 cm x 28 cm)
