Director Randal Kleiser's personal, hand-annotated screenplay and production binder from his classic film, Grease. In the film, good girl Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) and greaser rebel Danny Zuko (John Travolta) fell in love over the summer holiday, then found themselves at odds while trying to rekindle their love at Rydell High.
In 1978, Travolta had an incredibly successful year. He starred in the hit TV show Welcome Back, Kotter, made his debut in the successful film Saturday Night Fever, and was about to star in another blockbuster hit as Danny Zuko in Grease. Travolta became a superstar overnight, thanks to the success of the two soundtrack albums that accompanied these films, which topped the charts at no. 1 and 2. Grease was a massive success, earning the no. 2 spot at the box office that year, second only to Jaws 2 (1978). It also became the highest-grossing musical film of all time, surpassing The Sound of Music, and was Paramount's second highest-grossing film ever.
Utilized by Kleiser throughout production as he directed the film and noted his creative process, this lot consists of a red vinyl three-ring binder with a red and white vinyl "Rydell High School" label and "GREASE Randal Kleiser 213-650-6284" labeled on the side The binder features eight handwritten label dividers - Production, Casting, Design, Music, Schedule, Script, Direction - and two blank dividers.
These sections are divided as the Production section with staff and crew list with miscellaneous production memos; Casting section with a cast list and contact information, including additional memos on extras; Design section of production documents regarding film trailers and television footage; Music section with memos between production and RSO records regarding song approvals and music sheets; Schedule section with a 23-page final shooting schedule dated July 29, 1977, an 11-page shooting schedule dated June 23, 1977, two pages of handwritten notes for the schedule work, and five pages of call sheets, maps, and directions; Script section containing script related notes such as a three-page handwritten letter titled "Notes for Pat from Tommy" dated May 1, 1977 that compares the feature film to the Broadway musical and 11 handwritten pages of script idea notes; a section containing the complete 121-page fourth draft screenplay dated June 9,1977 with over 100 pages that feature hand-made markings and more than 50 hand-annotated by Kleiser; and a final section with memos and notes relating to early ideas for the film circa 1976.
In total, this binder includes over 150 pages of notes, drawings, and correspondences, as well as the screenplay, which features Kleiser's extensive handwritten notes and dialog. This lot exhibits tarnishing on the binder rings, loose and discolored pages, as well as peeling vinyl and grime on the binder exterior cover.
