A light-up LV-426 Atmosphere Processing Plant building facade model miniature for forced-perspective shots from James Cameron's Aliens. Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and the Colonial Marines inspected the abandoned control and operations room of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation's Atmosphere Processor (AP) on the desolate moon Acheron. After the dropship crashed and damaged the power plant's cooling system, Bishop (Lance Henriksen) informed the dwindling crew that the colony would soon be destroyed, then volunteered to travel to the transmitter to remotely pilot the remaining dropship to the surface.
"Flat" facade photograph-based building models of this style were created for forced-perspective shots, where the images were mounted to acrylic backings and lit from behind. This particular, smaller-scale model was custom-assembled and hand-painted by Robert Skotak's 4-Ward Productions for shots of the dropship entering Acheron's atmosphere, as a larger-scale model was prohibitively large for aerial view shots. Aliens ultimately won two Academy Awards®, including one for Best Visual Effects.
This model miniature consists of two facades: a smaller foreground facade comprised of composite wood board, and a larger facade made of acetate with foam support boards. Both facades feature wires adhered to the back, while the larger facade is installed throughout with LEDs designed to illuminate when plugged into AC power.
Following production, this model underwent sympathetic restoration to return functionality to its electronics. It now includes an external supply which should not be connected for extended periods of time, as it overheats. This lot shows evidence of wear consistent with on-set use, handling, and age, in addition to discoloration, cracking, and lifted adhesive. Dimensions: (largest) 36" x 7.5" x 16" (91.5 cm x 19 cm x 40.75 cm)
