A. J. Frost's (Ben Affleck) spacesuit helmet with Rockhound's (Steve Buscemi) light-up spacesuit from Michael Bay's Armageddon. A. J. wore his helmet when he traversed the asteroid where he, Harry (Bruce Willis), and the crew of the Freedom worked to prevent Earth's annihilation. Rockhound also wore his spacesuit on the asteroid until he developed what Colonel Willie Sharp (William Fichtner) called "space dementia" and had to be restrained.
Affleck was among the first actors to guinea-pig the spacesuits, which weighed over 70 lbs. (approximately 30 kg) and cost more than $1 million to design and create after Bay personally requested extensive redesigns. For their work designing the detailed suits, costumiers Michael Kaplan and Magali Guidasci received a prestigious Saturn Award® nomination for Best Costumes.
This lot originates from Planet Hollywood. In addition to the fiberglass and metal helmet, it consists of a large-weave nylon-blend fabric two-piece spacesuit decorated with cast resin and metal components and equipped with an elaborate 12V battery-powered electronics system designed to illuminate LEDs on the helmet, chest, and backpack. The spacesuit is intentionally distressed by production to appear discolored and grimy from traveling across unforgiving asteroid terrain. It and the helmet come mounted to a mannequin for stability and display.
The following loose components are also included with the display:
A collar made of fiberglass and metal with "Rockhound" handwritten on an adhesive label on the underside.
A front-and-back pull-over pack with resin, metal, and rubber adornments labeled "USA."
A pair of gloves, including one hand-marked "Sharp" and one marked "Rockhound," with rubber finger tips and milled aluminum locking rings affixed with self-adhesive strips
A webbed nylon utility belt with pouches.
A pair of modified leatherette-covered Vans boots with adornments matching those on the sleeves and legs.
Following production, the lot underwent sympathetic repairs to restore functionality to its electronics. It shows evidence throughout of wear consistent with on-set use, handling, and age, including small breaks, cracks, and missing parts, including the helmet's visor and locking mechanisms along the collar. Dimensions: (displayed) 16.5" x 27.5" x 79" (42 cm x 70 cm x 200 cm)
