Batman's (Val Kilmer) open bat-bola from Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever. Batman used his bat-bola to trip up one of Two-Face's (Tommy Lee Jones) henchmen as he fought a group of them during the bank robbery. Later, the bat-bola was lost during The Riddler's (Jim Carrey) attack on the Batcave.
While initially absent from early draft scripts for Batman Forever, Batman's bat-bola was added later as a variant of the superhero's signature Batarang. The Batarang was first introduced in the 1939 Detective Comics #31 issue, and received various gadget expansions during the 1940s, which included a pre-bola-style rope version, when DC Comics instituted a "No Gun" and "No Kill" policy. From that point forward, the bola became one of the most enduring elements of Batman's arsenal to ensnare criminals.
Production illustrator and prop designer Chris Ross designed the stylized Batarang "bat-bola," which was first introduced in Batman Forever and is unique to the film. Bat-bolas, capable of separating into two halves connected by a rope and fitting back together, are relatively rare. Batman Forever was ultimately nominated for three Academy Awards®, including Best Cinematography, Best Sound, and Best Sound Effects Editing. The film also received an MTV Movie Award® for Best Song from a Movie for "Kiss from a Rose" by Seal.
This "functional" bat-bola consists of two resin halves, each a half-sphere with a scalloped Batarang wing, connected by a black cotton rope. The halves can fit together to make a closed bola, and allow the wings to be positioned together in a fold, or spread out. This lot shows wear consistent with on-set use, handling, and age. Dimensions: (wings extended) 9" x 2.5" x 2.5" (23 cm x 6.5 cm x 6.5 cm)
Estimate: $3,000 - 6,000
