Edward Scissorhands' (Johnny Depp) scissorhands from Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands. Created by a visionary inventor (Vincent Price), shy and sheltered Edward lived away from the neighborhood until he was discovered by saleswoman Peg Boggs (Dianne Wiest), who decided to take him in despite his terrifying bladed hands. Initially viewed with distrust, Edward worked his way into the hearts of the neighborhood residents by shaping topiaries, cutting hair, and carving ice with his signature hands, including when he wooed Kim (Winona Ryder), the girl he came to love.
Edward Scissorhands was a critical and commercial success upon its release, and became a defining film in director Tim Burton's oeuvre. In addition to its Academy Award® nomination for Best Makeup, the film received four BAFTA Award® nominations, of which it won one for Best Production Design. An idol for outcasts and the strange in a pastel preppy world, Edward Scissorhands remains a cult classic film that has left a lasting legacy in pop culture.
Both hero and stunt sets of Edward's namesake hands were created by Academy Award®-winning Stan Winston Studio with his blades designed to be changed out throughout the course of filming. This pair of hands features original blade fingers cast from both resin and rubber which changed, as needed, through the course of production. Like most stunt sets, it lacks certain hardware found on hero hands, including small screw heads, wrist cuffs, and spring fittings, hardware not required for a set that was not rigged for close up mechanical work.
Each hand features metal bolts and wrist rings inset with blade "fingers" cast from both resin and rubber around interior wire armatures to avoid injuring the performers. Both are hand-painted to resemble metal scissor and clipper blades of different styles, while the right hand also features two sleeved holes at the back made by production to run wires for operating Edward's scissors.
The hands come mounted to nylon gloves on foam hand busts attached to a clear acrylic display base. This lot shows evidence of wear consistent with use, handling, and age. Dimensions: (each) 21" x 9" x 5" (53.5 cm x 23 cm x 12.75 cm)
