A pair of light-up force field fence posts from Fred M. Wilcox's Forbidden Planet. After an invisible intruder sabotaged the communication equipment, Lieutenant Jerry Farman (Jack Kelly) erected a force field fence around the C-57D starship to catch the saboteur. Later that night, the intruder was caught in the force field, allowing Commander John J. Adams (Leslie Nielsen) and his crew to fire their blasters at it, but to no avail, as it still managed to kill Farman and two others.
Adapted from William Shakespeare's The Tempest, Forbidden Planet received critical praise for its sets and special effects. It is considered one of the best science-fiction films of the 1950s and was nominated by the American Film Institute as one of its top 10 science-fiction films. It received an Academy Award nomination for Best Special Effects at the 29th Academy Awards in 1957. In 2013, it was selected for preservation by the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
This pair of light-up fence posts are made of metal with clear acrylic triangle attachments. The interior of the posts contain lightbulbs connected to a power cord. The posts have undergone sympathetic restoration to re-attach some of the acrylic triangles, reinforce all of the acrylic triangles, and reattach the ring at the top of the complete post. One post is missing a pair of its triangles. This lot shows wear consistent with on-set use, handling, and age. Dimensions: (each) 22" x 22" x 51.5" (56 cm x 56 cm x 130.5 cm)
