Sarah's (Jennifer Connelly) screen-matched waistcoat and shirt with a brooch from Jim Henson's Labyrinth. Sarah changed into her signature waistcoat and poet shirt after she arrived home drenched from the rain, then continued to wear her signature costume as she made her way through the seemingly unending open corridor at the start of the labyrinth. Distinctive brocade pattern alignment, button placements, and accessory positioning screen-match this waistcoat to multiple scenes, most notably including when Sarah first came across Hoggle (voiced by Brian Henson) urinating in a pool.
Caught in the limbo between childhood and young adulthood, Sarah's desire to be treated as a grown-up was reflected in her mature style of dress, which contrasted with the more childlike aesthetic of her bedroom. Sarah's costumes were custom-designed by renowned costumier Ellis Flyte (working alongside long-time Henson costume and effects designer Brian Froud) as reflections of the same burgeoning adulthood that ultimately led her to wishing away her baby brother to Jareth, the King of the Goblins (David Bowie).
A cult classic, Labyrinth has endured as one of the best fantasy films of all time, and its lasting legacy has spawned countless other media, such as books, comic books, video games, pinball machines, and a stage adaptation. For their work on the film, Flyte and Froud both received Saturn Award® nominations for Best Costumes, while Henson, Terry Jones, and Dennis Lee received a prestigious Hugo Award® nomination for Best Dramatic Presentation.
This custom-made waistcoat, shirt, and brooch originate from costume designer Flyte and are coming to public auction for the first time. The vest is a silk brocade with metallic thread scrollwork that has been altered by production. The attached brooch is a stick pin made of metal with a faux gemstone, and the shirt is linen. Both the vest and shirt feature an Ellis Flyte costumer's label. Production intentionally distressed this vest and shirt to appear "broken down" for effect. This vest has undergone sympathetic restoration to replace the interior lining fabric and keep the vest stabilized.
This lot shows discoloration consistent with production use and age.
Additional Provenance: Paperwork including correspondence with Flyte from when the set was originally obtained in 1989.
Estimate: $25,000 - 50,000
