Mia Wallace's (Uma Thurman) costume from Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. Mia wore her ensemble when Vincent Vega (John Travolta) arrived to take her out, then later while they visited a 1950's style themed diner and partook in a twist dance competition before returning home, where she accidentally overdosed on Vega's stash.
Wallace dancing with Vincent Vega at Jack Rabbit Slim's, having kicked off her shoes to dance barefoot in her white top and black pants, is one of the most memorable sequences in the entire film. Tarantino was inspired to write the dance sequence based on his admiration for the joyous spontaneity of the musical numbers in the films of Jean-Luc Godard, particularly Bande a part. This costume is one of the most complete examples of the ensemble worn by Wallace in the famous dance scene to ever to come to market.
While Uma Thurman had appeared in several films before Pulp Fiction, it was Pulp Fiction that truly launched the actress into A-list stardom. Thurman was featured prominently in the film's promotional materials, including on its famous poster, and her performance as Mia Wallace earned her an Academy Award® nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Pulp Fiction was Thurman's first collaboration with director Quentin Tarantino, who considers Thurman as his muse and once praised her as "up there with Garbo and Dietrich in goddess territory." Thurman would go on to star in Tarantino's critically acclaimed Kill Bill films.
Pulp Fiction was the top-grossing film at the US box office during its first weekend and became the tenth-highest grossing film of 1994, despite playing at significantly fewer theaters than any other film in the top 20. It was named Best Picture by more than seven prominent film critic associations, won the Palme d'Or® at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival, and was nominated for seven Academy Awards®, including a win for Tarantino and Roger Avary's original screenplay. Considered by many to be Tarantino's magnum opus, Pulp Fiction was selected in 2013 for preservation in the US National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
The costume is coming to public auction for the first time. It features a cotton-blend long-sleeve button-up shirt from Isani Shirts (Size S), a pair of cotton-blend pants from Agnes B. (Size 40), and a wardrobe tag hand-marked "Mia Wallace," "Uma Thurman." The shirt was custom-tailored by the production to take it in at the sides to better fit Thurman. The lot shows minor staining from use and age.
