John Travolta's personal, hand-annotated shooting script from John Badham's Saturday Night Fever. Travolta received his first Academy Award® for his role as disco-dancing Tony Manero, in one of the definitive films of the 1970s.
Travolta gifted this script to Alex Marchak Jr., a regular at 2001 Odyssey (the nightclub where many of the film's iconic scenes were filmed) who became friendly with choreographer Lester Wilson. On the final day of shooting, Travolta handed Marchak this script and the accompanying items.
Credited to Norman Wexler from an article and script by Nik Cohn, this "Final Version" script is 116 pages long and dated "February 26, 1977". The title page features the film's working title "Tribal Rites of Saturday Night" and "John Travolta" is handwritten in pencil in the upper right corner. The script is printed on different colored pages, indicating multiple revisions, and the colored pages feature revision dates at the top. All the script's pages are contained in a black three-ring binder.
The script has extensive handwritten notes and annotations, including dialog changes in pencil and ink by Travolta from the cover page, where he notates shooting days with a corresponding "*no Rain" above numbered dates. On pages 43, 99, and 105, there are major dialog changes, where Travolta has crossed out the original dialog in pencil and written the new lines in the margins.
Included in the interior pocket of the script binder is a silk-screened "Saturday Night" parking permit, three call sheets, and a personal two-page handwritten letter from writer/producer Barbara Gallagher to John Travolta, dated "April 27, 1977", expressing sympathy at the recent passing of Diana Hyland, Travolta's girlfriend. The script exhibits some wear from production use and age. Many pages are coffee-stained, and the first few pages are loose. Dimensions: 11.5" x 10" x 1.5" (29 cm x 25.5 cm x 4 cm)
