Shazam's (Zachary Levi) costume from the production of David F. Sandberg's Shazam! After receiving the power of the ancient wizard Shazam (Djimon Hounsou), teenager Billy Batson (Asher Angel) gained the ability to turn into a muscular adult superhero clad in a distinctive red bodysuit with a bolt of lightning on his chest and a short, hooded cape lined with the Greek Key by speaking the magic acronym "S.H.A.Z.A.M."
Batson and his Shazam alter ego, originally known as Captain Marvel, were first introduced by Fawcett Comics in 1939, and became among the industry's most popular creations throughout the 1940s, to the point of eclipsing Superman. DC Comics acquired the rights to the character decades later, licensing them in 1972 and purchasing them outright in 1991. For Sandberg's film, Shazam's supersuit - recognized around the globe for its iconic front lightning bolt - was redesigned by costume designer Leah Butler, who added additional fine detail to the costume by printing directly onto the fabric. Only 10 total Shazam supersuits are known to have been made for the principal and stunt performers.
This ensemble was assembled from costume components made for production, but ultimately unseen in the final cut. Additional work was also performed following filming for display purposes. The costume consists of:
A thick wool fabric cape.
A compressive spandex and silicone bodysuit with zip closure, urethane chest armor, and elastic stirrups sewn into the legs.
A foam form vest with a zip closure.
A stunt vest with battery pack pockets and electrical wiring hand-marked "Stunt" and "XL" alongside additional writing.
A pair of urethane suspenders.
A urethane waist belt.
The electronic cables affixed to the suit were designed to power the glowing effect of Shazam's lightning bolt chest emblem, which was achieved by wiring thin lighting elements through the chest. This supersuit comes displayed on a custom-made mannequin in Levi's likeness. It shows evidence of wear consistent with on-set use, handling, and age, including fading of the additional writing on the electrical vest.
