Spock's (Leonard Nimoy) screen-matched science officer costume from Season 3 of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek: The Original Series. Spock wore his signature Starfleet science officer's uniform while serving as first officer of the starship USS Enterprise throughout the series.
Beginning in Season 3, production moved away from the velour previously used for the crew tunics to a nylon fabric that did not shrink when washed and maintained its shape. Distinctive patterning around the Starfleet patch on the chest of this tunic, as well as the specific crinkle pattern on the patch itself, screen-matches to shots of Spock in the classic episode "The Cloud Minders."
Gene Roddenberry's groundbreaking original Star Trek series was hugely influential on science fiction and spawned a massive multimedia franchise covering various television series, theatrical films, comics, video games, and more over the course of over 60 years. Spock remains one of the most iconic characters in the genre, as his emotional half-human side and his coldly logical half-Vulcan were constantly at odds throughout the franchise. A valued advisor and confidant to James T. Kirk (William Shatner), Spock is today seen as one of the most important and respected people in the Federation.
This costume originates from the collection of a long-standing Paramount Pictures executive, and is coming to public auction for the first time. It consists of one blue nylon tunic with a springweave-style collar and a pair of black lurex fabric pants that give it its subtle sparkle. The tunic features a pair of gold-color rank braids on both sleeves, indicating the rank of Commander, as well as a hand-embroidered reflective gold-color Starfleet science patch affixed to the left breast, an intact hidden zip closure with a fabric pull tab fitted along the left side, and a clasp at the neckline. Both the insignia and braids show no sign of ever having been removed or replaced.
The pants feature hook-and-loop strips on the side for attaching a phaser and another set of strips for the communicators on the back - a trait seen only in the costumes of principal characters - and "Leanard Nimoy [sic]" is handwritten on the interior of the pants pocket in white. Lurex fabric was intentionally chosen to keep the pants from appearing flat under the studio lights and pop on the low-resolution CRT televisions of the 1960s.
Additionally, as production switched from using belts for Starfleet communicators and phasers to fastening strips between seasons, three fastening strips are sewn into the pants: a small square on the back, a small strip for attaching a lightweight phaser, and a long, larger strip for attaching a heavier hero phaser. The pad on the right hip features a thread "loop" for the handle of the phaser to slip into, and additional strings to tie it off. Surviving examples of pants with their original fastening strips intact are extraordinarily scarce. This costume is one of the best examples of Spock costumes to ever surface.
This lot shows evidence of fading and a loosened collar due to age, in addition to wear consistent with on-set use, handling, and age. The gold foil on the insignia has lifted at the center and remains delicate.
This lot was hand-inspected and verified by renowned Star Trek expert and archivist Rob Klein.
