A concept artwork of Dagobah hand-painted by legendary artist Ralph McQuarrie from the production of Irvin Kershner's Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. The swamp world of Dagobah served as one of the film’s most important settings, where Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) sought out the exiled Jedi Master Yoda and began his training in the ways of the Force.
Ralph McQuarrie was instrumental in shaping the visual identity of the Star Wars saga, producing the iconic designs that helped convince 20th Century Fox to finance the original film. His artwork defined everything from Darth Vader and C-3PO to the worlds, vehicles and environments that became synonymous with the franchise. McQuarrie composed many of his paintings of planets for both A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back in small studies first before translating them to full-size matte paintings, ultimately earning him a credit as "planet and satellite artist on ANH.
This concept artwork was hand-painted in acrylic on an illustration board during the pre-production of The Empire Strikes Back and originates from the personal collection of Industrial Light & Magic painter Michael Pangrazio, a protégé of McQuarrie’s. According to provenance, McQuarrie personally gifted the artwork to Pangrazio.
The Empire Strikes Back is widely regarded as one of the greatest sequels ever made, praised for its darker storytelling, groundbreaking visual effects and unforgettable revelations. Together with McQuarrie’s visionary artwork, the film helped establish Star Wars as one of the most influential and enduring franchises in cinematic history.
