An original hero Morlock mask from George Pal’s post-apocalyptic sci-fi The Time Machine, based on the classic novel by H.G. Wells. The principal antagonists of the film, the Morlocks were a post-human species that hunted and ate the story's other post-human species, the Eloi.
This mask, made by credited makeup creator William Tuttle, is one of only a few hero versions created for production. It differs from Tuttle's other Morlock masks through its higher level of detail and its lack of nostril holes, a design choice made to ensure the mask stood up to scrutiny both in the film and in publicity photographs.
Following the film’s production, Pal himself retained the mask, displaying it in his office alongside other original pieces from The Time Machine, many of which perished in the Bel Air fire of 1961, which destroyed Pal’s home. The mask remained in his possession until the late 1970s, when he gifted it to an effects-artist friend.
The mask is made of molded vinyl, and comes with its original wig, as well as featuring two wired bulbs in the eyes which were used to create a red glowing effect. The electronics have not been tested. Owing to its age, the mask is fragile and should be handled with care.
Estimate: $25,000 - 50,000
