Old Rose’s (Gloria Stuart) screen-matched mirror from James Cameron's Titanic. After she saw a news report about the discovery made by the research vessel Akademik Mstislav Keldysh, an elderly Rose contacted Brock Lovett (Bill Paxton) to reveal she was the woman in the drawing. Once aboard the Keldysh, under the hope that Rose would help locate the Heart of the Ocean necklace, Lovett provided Rose with various personal items recovered from the sinking, including a hand mirror. This mirror screen-matches based on the distressing pattern on both sides, seen closely when Rose looked at her reflection in it.
An incredibly ambitious undertaking, Titanic's combination of detailed period costumes, lavish sets, extensive model miniatures, and groundbreaking digital effects made it the most expensive film ever made at the time of production. Ultimately, the film became the first to reach the billion-dollar mark in worldwide grosses and received a record-setting 14 Academy Award® nominations, with 11 wins, including Best Picture and Best Director. In 2017, the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
This mirror has a metal frame and a reflective glass pane. Production intentionally distressed it to give the appearance of age, water-damage, and cracked glass. This lot shows evidence of wear consistent with on-set use, handling, and age. Dimensions: 5.5" x 0.5" x 11.5" (14 cm x 1.25 cm x 29.25 cm)
Estimate: $8,000 - 16,000
