Lieutenant Rick "Hollywood" Neven's (Whip Hubley) bomber jacket from the production of Tony Scott's Top Gun. In the climactic sequence, Lt. Tom "Iceman" Kazansky (Val Kilmer) and his loyal wingman, Hollywood, provided air support for the stranded SS Layton, but Wingman was forced to eject to safety when they were ambushed by a squad of MiGs.
The Top Gun pilots' bomber jackets - in particular, the iconic example worn in the film and its promotional materials by Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) - have become associated with Scott's film since it emerged as the highest-grossing film of 1986, winning an Academy Award®, Golden Globe®, and a Grammy® along the way. In the 39 years since, the film has been inducted into the National Film Registry with its well-named lead character inspiring numerous spin-offs and spoofs such as Hot Shots!, Team America: World Police, and his own highly acclaimed (and massively successful) sequel, 2022's Top Gun: Maverick. This bomber jacket was designed by men's costume supervisor James Tyson and his team for production, but ultimately unseen in the final cut. Following filming, it entered a private collection, where it has since remained. Made from leather, the Split-S Aviation US Navy intermediate zip-front flight jacket (size 42R) features a synthetic fur collar, an elasticated hem and cuffs, and satin lining on the interior. It is emblazoned with a Top Gun name patch embroidered "Rick Neven 'Hollywood,'" a "Tactical Wings Atlantic" patch, an American flag patch, and a USS DeSoto County patch, while the interior is hand-labeled "Hollywood" in ink. The jacket shows evidence of intentional production distressing together with wear consistent with on-set use, handling, and age, including holes throughout the hem and cuffs.
Estimate: $6,000 - 12,000
