Five concept sketches hand-drawn by renowned production illustrator Martin A. Kline during early pre-production on Chris Columbus' Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Kline originally drew these artworks as part of a pitch campaign for a visual effects house bidding to create the film's VFX. As that visual effects house lost its bid, the key characters in these artworks look significantly different to how they appeared in the film's final cut, offering a unique, rarely-seen window into the early development period for what would become one of the most popular films of all time.
The artworks represent a number of beloved sequences and characters first introduced in J. K. Rowling's book of the same name, including Harry Potter's (Daniel Radcliffe) visit to Gringotts Wizard Bank to collect his parents' (Geraldine Somerville and Adrian Rawlins) fortunes; Harry's bathroom fight with a troll alongside his new Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry schoolmate and best friend Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint); and Harry, Ron, and Hermione Granger's (Emma Watson) encounters with the three-headed dog Fluffy and knights on a chessboard that came to life in the climactic finale. As with many other moments from the film, these sequences were brought to life with a combination of live-action photography, model miniatures, and state-of-the-art computer-generated imagery (CGI) requiring extensively previsualization. The Sorcerer's Stone ultimately earned three Academy Award® nominations, as well as a BAFTA® nomination for Best Achievement in Special Visual Effects.
This set consists of sketches depicting a Gringotts goblin bank teller, Harry sticking his wand up a troll's nose, Fluffy (x2), and a ghostly knight. Each is rendered, signed, and dated "00" in graphite on vellum. They show evidence of minor wear consistent with handling and age. Dimensions: 10" x 16" (25.5 cm x 40.75 cm)
Sold without copyright; see notice in the Buyer's Guide.
