A collection of 17 unpublished photos from the production of and promotional events for George Lucas' Star Wars: A New Hope. Photographs were taken throughout the production of the first Star Wars film, including during the shooting days in the Death Valley desert; and on August 3rd 1977, R2-D2 (Kenny Baker), C-3PO (Anthony Daniels), and Darth Vader (touring performer Bryce Eller) left their footprints in the cement during a ceremony at Grauman's Chinese Theatre (then-called Mann's Chinese Theatre).
A New Hope was a massive cultural phenomenon upon release, earning more than $410 million in its initial theatrical run as well as 11 Academy Award® nominations, including six wins. It stands as the fourth-highest-grossing film of all time and the first installment in one of the most expansive, influential, and beloved science-fiction franchises in modern history.
This lot originates from the collection of long-time Lucasfilm producer and staffer Miki Herman. It consists of 17 color photographs depicting cast and crew shooting scenes in the desert, including George Lucas, a Bantha, someone wearing a Tusken Raider mask while surrounded by Tusken Raider, and a sign identifying the location as Artists Pallette; and photographs of depicting the footprint ceremony at the Chinese Theatre, including a shot of Darth Vader being interviewed by Los Angeles radio station KNX 1070. Also included is one paper bag hand-marked "2nd Unit ANH Footprint Ceremony Miki + Darth Vader Jedi Location Scout Redwoods Yuma" and "Negs with Proof Sheet Date 8-8-77." The lot shows evidence of wear consistent with handling and age, including yellowing to the photos and crinkling to the bag. Dimensions: (largest) 7.5" x 9.5" x 0.25" (19.25 cm x 24.25 cm x 0.75 cm)
Estimate: $800 - 1,600

Miki Herman began her professional career as a volunteer for the American Film Institute (AFI) in 1975. Through her connections at AFI, she was hired by the burgeoning Lucasfilm to help fill out Christmas cards for producer Gary Kurtz, becoming one of its earliest employees in the process. By late 1976, Herman had joined the production of George Lucas' Star Wars: A New Hope as a production assistant on second unit photography in Death Valley, where she helped in the shooting of the Mos Eisley Cantina sequence. Herman swiftly became an integral staff member at the company, rising first to Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) production coordinator for The Empire Strikes Back, then to unit production manager for Return of the Jedi. In the early-1980s, she oversaw Lucasfilm's first entries into television, serving as an executive producer on such projects as the Ewoks and Droids series before leaving the company later that decade. Over the course of her 10 years with Lucasfilm, Herman maintained a vast, personal archive of materials - including production bibles, behind-the-scenes paperwork, and budgetary details - rarely seen by the general public until today. Propstore is proud to offer this distinctive selection of memorabilia from the peerless Miki Herman Collection for the first time.
