Cole Oyl's (MacIntyre Dixon) boots from Robert Altman's Popeye. Cole wore his oversized boots while demanding apologies for slights unclear from his daughter Olive (Shelley Duvall), his wife Nana (Roberta Maxwell), and other members of his family over dinner with Popeye (Robin Williams).
Altman's production famously invested massive manpower and production time into recreating the seafaring world of Popeye as first introduced by E. C. Segar in the Thimble Theatre comic strips in 1929 on location in Malta. In homage to Segar's humorous original designs for the Oyls, Altman's long-time costumier Scott Bushnell designed comically-exaggerated boots for Cole and Olive, fellow residents of Seahaven, and even Popeye himself, all of which appeared throughout the film.
While not a success with critics upon release, Popeye has since been reevaluated as one of the most ambitious and eccentric productions of the 1980s. It is today considered a cult classic, with the original Maltese set still standing as a major tourist attraction known as Popeye Village.
These custom suede lace-up boots feature exaggerated toes with pleated material at front, metal lace rivets, leather lining on the interiors, and rubber soles. One boot is stamped with a Maltese Customs stamp dated "5DEC1979," while another is hand-marked "Ma. Dixon" and numbered with size "9." The pair shows evidence of wear consistent with on-set use, handling, and age.
Estimate: $800 - 1,600
