Framed City of Tombstone Common Counsel Laws notice from the production of George P. Cosmatos' Tombstone autographed by key cast members Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, and Bill Paxton. In the film, Virgil Earp (Elliott) drew the ire of Tombstone's citizens when he posted a notice declaring that deadly weapons, including the guns so frequently used to settle their disputes, were no longer legal in town.
Upon release, Tombstone famously eclipsed its direct competitor, Lawrence Kasdan's Wyatt Earp, to become among the highest-grossing Westerns of all time. It is today recognized as a modern masterpiece in the storied genre, with surviving memorabilia from its notoriously challenging Arizona shoot extremely scarce.
This notice featuring five points regarding the new gun laws originates from assistant propmaster Greg Poulos. Custom-printed in monochrome to appear vintage but ultimately unused in the final cut, it is headlined "City of Tombstone Territory of Arizona," dated "April 19 1881," and printed with the signatures of Mayor John Clum (Terry O'Quinn), city clerk "Seward B. Chapin, and attorney "Marcus P. Hayne." The notice is signed and inscribed "Wyatt S. Earp Deputy Marshall" [sic] by Russell, "Doc" by Kilmer, "Virgil Earp" by Elliott, and "Morgan S. Earp Town Marshall" [sic] by Paxton, all in black marker. It comes mounted behind glass in a custom frame. Dimensions: (framed) 26" x 18" x 1" (66 cm x 45.75 cm x 2.5 cm)
Additional Provenance: Letter of Authenticity from Poulos.
